In today’s increasingly competitive world, access to higher education is more critical than ever. However, for many girl students in India — especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds — pursuing a college degree can be a major challenge due to financial constraints. That’s where the Azim Premji Scholarship steps in — an ambitious initiative by the Azim Premji Foundation to support girl students in their journey toward higher education.

What Is the Azim Premji Scholarship?

The Azim Premji Scholarship is a fully-funded educational support programme designed to help girl students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursue their first undergraduate degree or diploma course. Launched by the Azim Premji Foundation, this scholarship offers financial support of ₹30,000 per year for the full duration of a student’s first regular degree or diploma programme (2 to 5 years).

This initiative is one of the largest philanthropic efforts in India aimed at improving access to higher education for girls, promoting gender equity, reducing dropouts, and enabling more young women to fulfil their academic potential.

Why the Scholarship Matters

Despite India’s progress in school enrolment rates, many girls still face financial and social barriers when transitioning from school to college. These challenges often result in high dropout rates after Class 12 — particularly among students from government schools and low-income families.

The Azim Premji Scholarship seeks to break this cycle by providing consistent financial support directly to the student’s bank account, helping cover essential expenses such as:

  • Tuition fees

  • Books and study materials

  • Transport and living expenses

  • Other college-related costs

By easing financial pressure, the scholarship empowers girls to make education their priority — thereby boosting confidence, independence, and long-term career prospects.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

To be considered for the Azim Premji Scholarship, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

🎓 Gender and Education

  • Must be a girl student.

  • Must have passed both Class 10 and Class 12 as a regular student from a government school or college.

🎓 Admission Requirement

  • Should have secured admission in the first year of a recognised undergraduate degree or diploma programme (2–5 years) in a government or bona fide private college/university for the academic session (e.g., 2025-26).

📍 State/UT Criteria

  • Applicants should have completed their Class 10 and 12 education in one of the eligible States/Union Territories such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand and others covered in the programme.

Important Notes

  • This scholarship is not merit-based; it’s need-based support to help overcome economic hurdles.

  • Distance learning or part-time courses do not qualify; only regular full-time programmes are eligible.

How Much Support Do Students Get?

Each selected student receives ₹30,000 per year, which is credited directly into her bank account. This funding continues for the entire duration of her degree or diploma — from the first year through graduation — provided she remains enrolled and meets the programme conditions.

Over a typical 3-year undergraduate programme, that amounts to ₹90,000 in support — a substantial contribution toward educational expenses for families who otherwise might struggle to fund higher studies.
